Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng was born 21/11/1985. Chieng is currently a senior correspondent on The
Daily Show on Comedy Central and creator and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng
International Student which was first shown on ABC (Australia) as well as
Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a
Malaysian Chinese family. He was raised in Singapore and the United States,
living in Manchester, New Hampshire from 1989 until 1994. Chieng appeared with Trevor
Noah in 2013 at an event for comedy in Melbourne, Australia. A few years later,
he was asked to take on the role of a correspondent on The Daily Show, which
Noah hosts. He was named one of the 10 most watched comics in the July issue of
Variety. In October 2016, Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss a Jesse
Watters Fox News segment some believed was racist. Chieng presented an
expletive-laden critique of the segment on Fox News that was deemed
conservative by many. He also visited NewYork City's Chinatown where Watters
made fun of residents. The viral video garnered attention in Slate and
Washington Post. In his young years, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. While
he's been in Australia for more than a decade Chieng doesn't have citizenship
or permanent residency status in Australia. In the year 2018, Chieng made a
joke about being negative during the Daily Show and later clarified in an
interview that Chieng was "100 percent not afraid of dogs".
