Maureen O'Hara

Maureen O'Hara (born Maureen FitzSimons; 17 August 1920 - - 24 October 2015) was an Irish actor and singer who became successful in Hollywood in the 1940s through the '60s. Her natural redhead nature led her to be a sought-after choice for playing strong but intelligent heroines in Westerns and adventure movies. Charles Laughton was the first to see her potential as a star and introduced her to Hollywood. She worked with John Ford and John Wayne who was a friend for a long time and director. O'Hara was born and was raised in Dublin, Ireland, in a Catholic family. She aspired to be an actress from an early age. She studied with the Rathmines Theatre Company from the age of 10 and attended the Abbey Theatre from the age of 14. After the screen test, she was not accepted. However, Charles Laughton recognized her potential and offered to have her as a star in Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn in 1939. RKO Pictures offered her a contract. The actress also moved to Hollywood the same year to play with Hitchcock in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. From there, she went on to enjoy a lengthy and extremely successful career and acquired the nickname "the Queen of Technicolor". In films like How Green Was My Valley (1941) it was her first collaboration The Black Swan with Tyrone Power (1942), The Spanish Main with Sinbad the Sailor (1947), the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947) along with John Payne (and Natalie Wood) and Comanche Territory (1950), she appeared. O'Hara was in Rio Grande (1950) as O'Hara, a character played by John Wayne, her most close friend. The film was followed by The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles (1957), McLintock! (1963) and Big Jake (1971). Wayne was so strong in her relationship with O'Hara, that some believed they were in a marriage. She became more motherly as she grew older, appearing in films such as The Deadly Companions (1961) as well as The Parent Trap(61) and The Rare Breed (1966). In 1971, she resigned from film production. But she returned to the film industry 20 years later to star alongside John Candy in Only the Lonely (1991).
